I heard the story a couple weeks back after the death of Jack Twyman. Everyday we are plagued with negative news events, so I think it’s important that these type of stories continue to be told.

The former president of St. Francis became president of the college where my wife teaches, Gwynedd-Mercy (Pa.) and I met her at the welcoming party. Anyway, when I met her the only thing I said to her was “Maurice Stokes” and she proceeded to tell me how his memory is still honored on the St. Francis campus, with the athletic center named after him.

Also, I don’t know who the basketball recruiter was at Cincinatti U. in the early 1950s, but their recruits in that era reportedly included Oscar Robertson, Jack Twyman, Sandy Koufax and Tony Trabert (US number one in tennis and Davis Cup Captain). Not a bad group of athletes.
