Rail Carload Volumes: A Gauge of the Economy

An often overlooked gauge of the US economy is hidden in our rail systems.  The amount of supplies/carloads shipped by rail is a very good indicator especially when you compare to boom and bust periods like we’ve had from 2007 to present.  Below is a chart showing Norfolk Southern’s Rolling 14-Day carloads.
